Clinical Review and Late Results of Breast Cancer

Abstract
One Hundred-ten patients with breast cancer underwent two different radical mastectomies, 39 radical and 71 modified, from March 1974 through March 1984. The ages of the patients ranged from 22 years to 72 years, and peak incidence was in the
fifth
and
sixth decades(67.3%). All were female. All were staged by TNM classification, 11.8% in stage I, 46.6% in stage I, 46.6% in stage II and 41.6% in stage III.
Ninety-three patients were periodically followed for longer than 5 years. Overall 5-and 10-year actuarial survival rates after surgery were 65.1% and 51.9%, respectively. Five-and 10-year survival rates among the patients with stage I disease
were
both
100%, 76.3% and 56.1% in stage II, and 36.7% and 29.4% in stage III, respectively. The overall locoregional recurrence rate was 15.0%. We confirmed that tumor size and the number of axillary lymbh node involvement are important prognostic
factors
in
breast cancer patients. There was no significant difference in survival rate between standard and modified radical mastectomy.
